A 110-Year-Old Home, Reimagined
Nestled in the historic charm of Princeton, New Jersey, this 110-year-old residence underwent an extraordinary transformation over 18 months. Stripped down to the studs, the home was meticulously reimagined into a refined, open-concept living space. The main level now flows seamlessly from dining to kitchen to living room, unified by a serene palette of cream, off-white, putty and oyster. Layered textures and curated objects d’art complete the aesthetic, achieving the homeowners’ vision of a contemporary yet timeless retreat.
At the heart of the home lies the kitchen—both literally and figuratively. Flanked by the dining and living areas, the space had to be functional while steering away from the traditional, utilitarian kitchen feel. The homeowners, both from the design industry, sought a highly curated, design-centric space where appliances and tools would not dominate the visual landscape. Häcker Kitchens provided the perfect solution, balancing seamless functionality with understated elegance.
Japandi Aesthetic: A Study in Balance
The inspiration behind the kitchen design was a Japandi aesthetic—a harmonious blend of Scandinavian simplicity and Japanese minimalism, punctuated by striking art objects. Careful material selection, thoughtful layering of textures and precise sightlines were integral to the design. Every detail was considered to achieve a space that felt effortlessly calming, with an emphasis on refined craftsmanship rather than the conventional display of kitchenware.
Overcoming Challenges with German Precision
Transforming a century-old home presented its share of challenges. With nothing level to begin with, “in-plane” became the guiding principle to ensure that every element fit perfectly in the finished space. The homeowners also mandated the elimination of baseboards and crown molding throughout, requiring an exceptional level of finish carpentry to achieve flawless transitions.
Häcker Kitchens rose to the challenge, delivering precision German engineering and custom craftsmanship that allowed for seamless integration. From the initial design phase, the homeowners were drawn to Häcker’s meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality. A Kitchen as Art
The kitchen features a refined mix of materials, including Taj Mahal Quartzite countertops and backsplash with a waterfall edge, adding a sense of organic luxury. The flooring—a custom-finished, wide-plank European white oak—lends warmth and continuity throughout the main level. Häcker’s reeded walnut veneer accents contrast beautifully against the smooth cabinet finishes, introducing depth and an inviting tactile quality.
Inside the cabinets, the kitchen is just as striking as its exterior. Custom drawer fit-outs ensure that every utensil, pot and pan has a designated place, maintaining the clutter-free aesthetic the homeowners desired. The result is a space where function and beauty coexist effortlessly.
